Another Defeat for the Pro-Suicide Movement in California
Physicians for Compassionate Care Education Foundation (PCCEF) is pleased to learn that the California Legislature decided to let an assisted suicide bill expire by natural means when it did not receive the necessary votes by the California Senate Judiciary Committee.
Sen. Joe Dunn, D-Santa Ana, who had been expected to vote to let the bill out of committee, said he feared the measure, however well-intentioned, would lead to assisted suicides its backers did not envision.
PCCEF applauds this effort to protect Californians from giving medical doctors the "license to kill".
We will continue to promote an ethic that all human life has inherent value, and that physician-assisted suicide is wrong because:
- It changes the role of the physician in society from the traditional one of healer to that of the executioner.
- It endangers trust in the patient-physician relationship.
- It places those who are most vulnerable, namely those near the end of life, at risk.
