Luxembourg may become third EU country to legalize euthanasia, after the Netherlands (Holland) and Belgium. Alex Schadenberg, Chairperson of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition - International states "the legalization of euthanasia in Luxembourg is a direct threat to the lives of Luxembourg's most vulnerable citizens, people with disabilities, the frail elderly, the chronically ill, and people who experience depression; need their lives protected and not threatened by legalized euthanasia." "Vulnerable people become highly dependent on others for their basic care. Therefore no safeguard can effectively protect the lives of vulnerable people against abuses of the law. Vulnerable people in Luxembourg need excellent pain management and end-of-life care and not death"
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is asking everyone to contact Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's office. The euthanasia bill has passed first reading by a vote of 30 to 26 and euthanasia will be legalized once it has passed second reading. Every member of the ruling Christian Social Party needs to vote against the euthanasia bill to ensure that it still be defeated on second reading. Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker is the leader of the ruling Christian social party and can be contacted via E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org or Fax: 011-352-46-17-20.
Physicians for Compassionate Care Education Foundation (PCCEF) believes that all human life has inherent value and that physician-assisted suicide:
- undermines trust in the patient-physician relationship
- changes the societal role of the physicians from healer to executioner
- endangers the value that society places on life, specifically for those who are most vulnerable.
PCCEF members will continue to assist individual patients and their families to access excellent palliative care at the end of life.
